PALA, Calif. (KGTV) — One woman is dead and another woman is in custody after a deadly head-on collision in the Pauma Valley area late Thursday.
Just after 10:30 p.m. Thursday, California Highway Patrol officers responded to reports of a head-on crash on State Route 76, just east of Adams Drive. When officers arrived, they discovered an Infiniti Q35 traveling westbound had collided with a Toyota Prius traveling eastbound.
CHP believes the Prius crossed over into the opposite side of the roadway to pass vehicles in its own lane, before slamming head-on into the Infiniti.
The 43-year-old driver of the Infiniti, a woman from Winchester, Calif., was pronounced dead at the scene. Her identity has not been released. Her passenger, a 44-year-old woman from Simi Valley, Calif., was taken to Palomar Medical Center for precautionary care and is expected to be okay.
The 23-year-old driver of the Prius, a woman from Temecula, was also taken to Palomar Medical Center with moderate injuries, according to CHP. After receiving treatment, she was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence or drugs.
