SPRING VALLEY (CNS) - A family of four was displaced Tuesday morning when a fire destroyed the roof of their Spring Valley apartment.
The blaze was reported about 9:20 a.m. at a single-story apartment on Troy Street between Central Avenue and Bancroft Drive, according to San Miguel Fire & Rescue.
Two children inside the home heard popping sounds outside and found flames by the side of the home when they went to check on the sound, SMFR Battalion Chief Roddey Blunt said.
The flames engulfed a Conex storage box near the home before spreading to the home's roof, Blunt said.
The children and the family's dog were able to escape unharmed, he said. Crews knocked down the flames within 40 minutes, but the home's roof was destroyed.
The American Red Cross was called to the scene to help the displaced residents -- two adults and two children -- arrange for temporary lodging, Blunt said.
The cause of the fire was under investigation.
