FALLBROOK, Calif. (KGTV) — A 12-year-old girl was shot in the chest after her cousin reportedly found a handgun and accidentally shot her at a Fallbrook home.

The shooting reportedly occurred just after 1:30 p.m. in the 900 block of Santa Margarita Dr., according to the San Diego Sheriff's Department.

The girl and her 12-year-old cousin were playing in a trailer in the home's driveway when her cousin reportedly found a semi-automatic handgun that wasn't locked away.

The motorhome was being prepared for a family trip at the time of the shooting, deputies say.

Deputies say while the boy was handling the gun, one round was discharged. The girl was shot in the left clavicle and airlifted to Rady Children's Hospital.

She was conscious and is expected to survive, according to deputies.

SDSO said the gun has been recovered.
