DEL MAR, Calif. (KGTV) — The City of Del Mar has canceled its annual dip into the morning's icy water to start off the new year.

The city's annual Penguin Plunge on New Year's Day 2021 has been canceled in order to comply with coronavirus restrictions, according to the city.

This year would have been the 35th straight year of the event.

Traditionally, the event draws many hundreds of visitors to 17th Street beach, where they greet the new year and symbolically wash away the old with a dip into the morning's frigid ocean waters.

"We will miss gathering with everyone at the beach for this popular tradition," said Jon Edelbrock, community services director and lifeguard chief.
