SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – A man was killed and his two children were taken to the hospital after a car crash in Carmel Valley Friday morning.

The single-vehicle wreck occurred just before 8 a.m. in the 12000 block of Carmel Canyon Road, near Del Mar Heights Road, according to San Diego police.

Police said the 50-year-old man died at the scene after the BMW he was driving swerved off the northbound lanes and crashed into a tree, causing the car to split in half.

The driver suffered major head injuries, and despite emergency responders’ efforts, he died at the scene.

The driver’s 17-year-old son sustained major head injuries considered life-threatening, while the driver’s 15-year-old daughter suffered minor injuries. Both were taken to the hospital.

Investigators are trying to determine if all three occupants were wearing safety belts at the time of the crash.

While the incident is under investigation, authorities believe the combination of Friday’s heavy rain and speeding may have led to the crash.

Investigators are reminding the public that even with less people on the roads, drivers should always follow traffic rules, such as the speed limit.
