SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- One person was seriously injured Thursday when a car swerved off a College-area street and crashed into a tree.
According to San Diego Police, the crash happened shortly before 11:30 a.m. on Montezuma Road, just southwest of San Diego State University.
Police say they found the driver sleeping in his car near College Ave. and Montezuma Rd and saw a gun between the driver's legs. When the driver woke up, he took off.
Police say the man sped down Montezuma Rd. East of Collwood Blvd. and crashed into a pine tree. He suffered serious injures and is recovering at Scripps Mercy Hospital.
The driver’s gun was found back at 54th and Montezuma, according to Police.
The accident forced a closure of the roadway between Collwood Boulevard and 54th Street as investigators documented the crash scene. All traffic lanes in the area were open again as of 2 p.m., a dispatcher said.
