SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - At least one person died in a wrong-way crash on southbound Interstate 5 near state Route 163 around 4:00 p.m. on Sunday, according to the San Diego Fire-Rescue Department.
A Nissan Versa appeared to be moving northbound in the southbound lanes when it crashed into a white Volkswagen minivan, according to CHP Sgt. Ray Scheidnes
The driver of the Nissan, a 44-year-old Maine man, was killed. The car he was driving had Arizona license plates and a suitcase in the trunk.
The driver in the white Volkswagen, a 67-year-old San Diego man, was taken to UCSD Medical Center in serious condition, Scheidnes said.
Only one person was in each car when they collided, according to SDFD Battalion Chief Dan Eddy.
CHP officers initially did not suspect DUI to be a factor in the crash, Scheidnes said.
