Lilac Fire horses race at Del Mar

DEL MAR, Calif. (KGTV) - Many of the horses that survived the Lilac Fire at San Luis Rey Downs are returning to Del Mar for the racing season.

Trainer Peter Miller told 10News his horses are ready for the races.

“They're just amazing animals. They're resilient and have tremendous courage,” said Miller.

Miller and the horses moved to Del Mar when the flames destroyed their home last December. Five of Miller’s horses died; several others were burned. Moving to Del Mar for the winter was a lifeline.

“It was necessary. Without Del Mar the whole industry would have been in bad shape without them opening up their doors and the track.”

Miller moved back to San Luis Rey Downs in the spring. Seven of his horses ran in Wednesday’s 10 races.
