Two men caught in the rising San Diego River were seizing up in the water and had to be rescued by lifeguards Tuesday.

Thick trees made a helicopter evacuation impossible, according to lifeguards.

Lifeguards were eventually able to get to them on the ground.

Lifeguards got the call around 7 p.m. in Mission Valley, just east of I-805.

Once helped arrived, the two homeless men were so affected by the cold, they couldn't stay still on the evacuation boards.

Lifeguards had to go back into the water several times before making it to Camino Del Rio North.

The two men suffered from hypothermia, but are expected to be okay.
