How to prepare and pack for an evacuation in San Diego County

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The Lilac Fire had North San Diego County residents grabbing their most precious belongings and packing up to evacuate.

Emergency officials have suggestions for what you should pack and how to prepare your home if you’re in an evacuation zone.

BEFORE EVACUATING

INSIDE

  • Shut all windows and doors, leaving them unlocked as you evacuate
  • Shut off your gas at the meter and turn off pilot lights
  • Leave your lights on
  • Turn off your air conditioning
  • Move flammable furniture away from windows and doors

OUTSIDE

  • Back your car into the driveway and carry your car keys with you
  • Check on neighbors
  • Have a ladder available outside for firefighters
  • Bring flammable items inside your home or put them in your pool
  • Turn off propane tanks
  • Move propane barbecues away from appliances
  • Connect garden hoses for firefighters to use
  • Fill water buckets and place them around the home
  • Don’t leave sprinklers or water running
