In a statement, the company said they were actively exploring opportunities for a new San Diego location:
"On December 31, 2017, Hard Rock Cafe San Diego, located at 801 4th Ave., will be closing. We are actively exploring other opportunities and expect to bring the cafe back to the area at the right time and in a new great location."
No further explanation for the closing was given. The Hard Rock Cafe is not physically connected to the Hard Rock Hotel, located at 207 5th Ave.

The Hard Rock Cafe has operated in San Diego's Gaslamp District just across from the Balboa and Lyceum Theatres since July 1998.
Like all Hard Rock locations, the cafe's walls have been clad in musical history and memorabilia, including a vintage fabric tank top worn by Gwen Stefani from a No Doubt world tour, and a Gibson Les Paul guitar signed by all the members of Aerosmith.
