SAN DIEGO – A man with a guitar helped fend off a possibly intoxicated man with a shotgun who attacked a woman outside a convenience store in Imperial Beach overnight Thursday.

The incident took place after 12:30 a.m. in the parking lot of a 7-Eleven in the 1300 block of Imperial Beach Boulevard.

The man and woman told San Diego County Sheriff’s deputies they were standing in the parking lot when the suspect suddenly drove up to them, got out and tried to start a fight. He briefly left in his car, and then returned with a 12-guage shotgun, which he pointed at the woman.

The suspect struck the woman in the face with his gun. The man with the guitar jumped in, fought the suspect and pinned him to the ground. He held him there until deputies arrived on scene.

"As far as I know, as soon as he pulled out the shotgun, the witness just immediately jumped on him and tried to pin him down and tried to wait for law enforcement to arrive," Sgt. Leonel Gurrole said.

The gun was not loaded, Gurrole said. The suspect was arrest on a count of assault with a deadly weapon. His name was not released.
