SAN DIEGO -- Higher than average surf with sets of up to 9 feet are expected at the beaches Friday evening and into the weekend as a northwest swell builds off the San Diego County coast.
A National Weather Service high surf advisory is scheduled to take effect at 4 p.m. today and extend until 4 p.m. Saturday. Surf of 4 to 7 feet and isolated sets to 9 feet are expected along west-facing beaches, with the highest hitting south of Del Mar and the Carlsbad coastline.
Forecasters said large waves may break over jetties and sea walls. Minor beach erosion and very strong rip currents will also be possible.
The surf is expected to lower somewhat Saturday evening but continue to be higher than normal into Sunday. High surf will again be possible late Monday into Tuesday as a second swell moves into coastal waters, according to the weather service.
