ALPINE, Calif. (KGTV) - Cal Fire says firefighters were able to save countless homes from the West Fire in Alpine due to defensible space.

When vegetation is cut back 100 feet from the home, firefighters have a safe opportunity to move in and defend a structure.

Thick vegetation can be dangerous for firefighters.

Terri Wahl was one of the fortunate homeowners in Alpine. She has defensible space and firefighters dropped retardant around the home.

“We have to take into consideration who has done defensible space and who has not,” said Cal Fire Captain Isaac Sanchez.

Cal Fire has already started the process of cleaning houses hit with the pink retardant.
