Defense Secretary James Mattis visits San Diego carrier strike group

Posted

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Secretary of Defense James Mattis will visit San Diego troops at sea and stop at Marine Corps Air Station Miramar Monday.

Mattis will spend his Labor Day observing carrier strike group training, military officials said. There were no details provided about which strike group was involved.

The former commanding officer of Naval Base Point Loma said Mattis’ visit is more unique than that of a politician or notable civilian.

“It means a lot to the troops it also means a lot to the secretary because it gives him a chance to get some unfiltered information about what’s happening at the deck flight level,” said Howard Warner III.

Mattis will travel to New Delhi, India and Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates, after leaving San Diego.
