Cruise ship season begins in San Diego

Posted

The 2015-16 cruise ship season began Wednesday in San Diego with the arrival of the 2,170-passenger Celebrity Cruises Infinity.

So far, 65 cruise ships are scheduled to make port calls in San Diego through May of next year, though port representatives say that number might change as the season progresses. The last cruise ship season saw 70 local port calls, bringing a total of around 200,000 passengers to town, according to the Port of San Diego.

Each port call is estimated to generate $2 million in local economic impact from passenger and crew spending, and businesses that service the ships, among other things.

The Infinity is on a nine-night Pacific coastal cruise that begins and ends in San Francisco. The cruise also visits Monterey, Santa Barbara, Catalina and Ensenada.
