Coronado Bridge lane closures begin tonight

Two of three southbound lanes on the San Diego-Coronado Bridge will be closed Wednesday night and most nights through the end of June so construction crews can paint and construct suspended scaffolding systems.

The roughly eight-week closure from Interstate 5 in San Diego to Fourth Street/Pomona Avenue in Coronado is expected to run Sundays through Thursdays, from 8 each night to 5 the following morning, according to Caltrans.

One of two lanes on the ramps connecting the northbound and southbound freeway to the bridge will also be closed during the same hours.

The construction is part of a $20.6 million effort to clean and paint bridge spans and construct internal maintenance traveler systems, which will allow inspection and maintenance crews to access the inside of the bridge, according to Caltrans.

State transit officials said the work was expected to be completed in November 2018.
