Coronado Beach becoming boat graveyard

CORONADO, Calif. -- Beachgoers are wondering why stranded vessels on Coronado’s otherwise pristine shores have not been removed yet.

The Navy says 20 boats have washed ashore on Coronado in 2017. As of Tuesday, there are 2 derelict vessels on the beach at Coronado’s Naval Air Station North Island The beach where the boats are is only accessible to people allowed on the base, but those south of the fence say it’s an issue.

“It still affects us environmentally because if any fuel spills out of the boat it’s gonna come right here on Coronado because it’s right there,” said Alvin Luckenbach.

The Navy says people anchor then abandon their boat at a jetty to free themselves of boat-related costs and that it has been difficult to enforce.

Since 2014, the Navy has spent more than half a million dollars removing abandoned boats from Coronado.
