SAN DIEGO -- A yearlong feasibility study determined that a physical suicide deterrent is suitable for the Coronado Bridge.

Caltrans says the study evaluated 11 alternatives aimed at preventing suicides from the bridge.

Alternatives listed by the study include a wire mesh fence, a transparent panel barrier, a net, and non-physical barriers that include license plate readers and additional signs.

“Caltrans is working with the community towards a suicide deterrent option for the San DiegoCoronado Bridge,” said Caltrans District 11 Interim Director Tim Gubbins. “The study is the first step in a process to prevent, or deter, people from harming themselves or others on the bridge.”

Caltrans says the next step in the process is to narrow the options down, then gather the funding needed for the project.
