A speeding motorist was arrested Saturday after leading California Highway Patrol officers on an hourlong pursuit at speeds of more than 100 mph at times throughout San Diego County, according to the CHP.
The chase began at about 10:40 a.m. on the southbound I-805 at El Cajon Boulevard, when a man driving a late model Nissan Altima sped past a CHP officer at about 90 mph, Officer Mary Bailey said.
The man, whose name has not been released, failed to yield to the officer who attempted to pull him over, Bailey said.
The driver reached speeds of 119 mph, continued south on 805, exited 47th Street and headed back north on the 805, merging north on Interstate 5 all the way to the Border Patrol checkpoint at San Onofre, according to Bailey.
There was one failed attempt to use a spike strip at Nobel Drive in the University City area, but the motorist drove around it. A San Diego Police canine unit and its ABLE helicopter, as well as the sheriff's ASTREA helicopter, were involved in the pursuit at various times, Bailey said.
It was not clear why the driver finally pulled over and surrendered without incident at 11:35 a.m., but heavy traffic at the checkpoint might have had something to do with it, Bailey said.
The driver was booked into the downtown Central Jail this afternoon.
