SALTON CITY, Calif. (KGTV) – Border Patrol agents arrested a man suspected of smuggling methamphetamine inside his pickup’s gas tank Friday morning.
U.S. Customs and Border Protection says the incident happened around 11:40 a.m. at the Highway 86 checkpoint.
Agents say a Border Patrol K-9 was alerted to the driver’s side of the vehicle when the 66-year-old man approached the checkpoint.
After inspection, agents found more than 77 pounds of methamphetamine inside the gas tank.
The estimated street value of the drugs is more than $270,000.
The man, vehicle and narcotics were all turned over to the Drug Enforcement Agency for further investigation.
