LAKESIDE, Calif (KGTV) - The body of a 12-year-old girl who fell from a boat on the San Vicente Reservoir over the weekend was recovered Wednesday.
San Diego Fire-Rescue Department officials confirmed that searchers located the girl’s body on the fifth day of the search.
The girl, who was visiting from Canada with her family, was aboard a ski boat in the late afternoon on Aug. 11 when she fell into the water and did not resurface. The boat was reportedly slowing down when the girl went overboard.
“The child was at the front of the boat. They were pulling an inflatable behind with the adults. As they come down on speed, the bow of the boat kind of slows and dips, and the child fell overboard,” Sgt. Bryan Brecht of the San Diego Police, Beach Team and Harbor Unit, said.
While she had a life jacket at the time of her fall, search teams discovered it five feet from the boat.
The rescue became a recovery mission hours after the girl disappeared.
10News learned crews used special sonar equipment and search dogs on boats during the recovery effort.
The girl’s identity was not officially released.
