SAN DIEGO - A family was tied up and held at gunpoint early Friday while thieves ransacked their Scripps Ranch-area home, authorities said.

Three men broke into the home in the 11000 block of Fortino Point near Scripps Preserve Road shortly before 3 a.m., San Diego police Officer Frank Cali said. After residents were bound, the trio of robbers escaped with cash, credit cards and jewelry.

Police said the suspects were only described as wearing dark bandanas and dark clothing. The homeowner said the thieves were black males.

Police said the homeowner's wife was tied up and placed in a hall closet. The thieves were going to take the homeowner to an ATM and force him to withdraw some money, but they ran off before completing that part of the plan.

No one was injured.
