SAN DIEGO -- A masked man attempted to rob a 7-Eleven store near Colina Del Sol at gunpoint Monday morning but fled empty-handed when the clerk ran to the back of the store to hide, authorities said.
The suspect pointed a long rifle at the clerk at the convenience store on University Avenue near 49th Street and demanded cash around 4:15 a.m., San Diego police Officer Frank Cali said.
The clerk did not hand over any money and sought refuge in the back of the store, according to the officer. The employee emerged a few minutes later as the would-be robber was leaving the store.
Police described the suspect as a white or Hispanic man in his 20s, roughly 5-foot-9 and 165 pounds. He was wearing a black mask and a white long-sleeve shirt over a blue hooded sweatshirt.
