SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — It seems appropriate, really. In fact, it would be downright unimaginable had it went any other way.
San Diego breweries seem to be the golden geese that travel in packs when it comes to beer competition. In Los Angeles, local brewers took home nearly 25% of all awards.
At the San Diego International Beer Competition, the result was no different, as local brewers claimed 60 medals in 41 style categories. In total, there were 60 style categories.
It's a celebratory feat still. Thirty-eight San Diego breweries took home (kept home?) 20 gold medals, 20 silver medals, and 20 bronze medals.
Three categories were completely swept by San Diego breweries: European Lager (Societe Brewing Company, San Diego Brewing Co., and Rip Current Brewing); Imperial Stout (Indian Joe Brewing, Dos Desperados Brewery, and Pizza Port Carlsbad); and Spiced and Specialty Mead (Twisted Horn Mead & Cider, Lost Cause Meadery).
The local leading medal holders were Societe (five medals), Rouleur Brewing (four medals), Pizza Port (four medals), and Rip Current (three medals).
