Horton Plaza in downtown San Diego is getting a major facelift.

The mall was originally built to look more like a fortress with its blank walls facing First and Fourth avenues.

But new plans will give it a more modern look.

Westfield, the owner of Horton Plaza, said it would replace the pastel stucco walls with a white façade and glass storefronts facing the street.

The $50 million project should start early next year and finish in 2010.
