Local Swim Coach Admits Molesting Girl

A Coronado swim coach admitted Monday that he molested a girl beginning when she was 12 years old and sent her text messages to solicit sexual acts.

Rogelio Gallardo, 32, pleaded guilty to one count of committing a lewd act with a minor and one count of communication with a minor with the intent to commit a sexual act, Deputy District Attorney Claudine Ruiz said.

The lewd act charge carries a maximum of eight years in prison and the communication count ranges up to four years, Ruiz said.

Very few facts about the case were on the record, so the prosecutor was unable to reveal details about the relationship between the defendant and the victim. Police apparently believed the girl was a swim student.

Gallardo, an Otay Mesa resident who was a coach for the Coronado Navy Swim Association, was arrested in June. He originally faced four child molestation counts involving the girl, with the incidents taking place when she was 12 and 13 years old.

Judge Esteban Hernandez scheduled sentencing for Dec. 1 at the South Bay Courthouse.
