Want $50 for buying AC? Better act fast

The warm temperatures are tempting many San Diegans to buy new air conditioners, but a special offer for those looking to beat the heat with a new AC unit is about to expire.

While many residents head to the beach on hot days, their homes bake in the sun, giving them a welcome that's more than warm.

However, those interested in buying a small air conditioner can get some help from San Diego Gas & Electric.

The utility will give someone who buys a wall or window air conditioner $50 back, but the offer ends April 22. After that, SDG&E will cancel the rebate due to changes at the Public Utilities Commission.

AC units generally cost between $130 and $600.

Brent Erickson of Aztec Appliance said the lack of rebates won't stop the sales.

"The hotter it gets, the more they sell," he said.

SDG&E is also ending cash back offers on gas furnaces, wall insulators and some kinds of refrigerators and washing machines. A spokeswoman for the utility said those products didn't get many applications.

The utility is starting new rebates on things like pool pumps, as well as natural gas and heat pump water heaters.
