The Home Depot breach was worse than previously thought.

Home Depot revealed Thursday that 53 million email addresses were leaked in a Sept. 8 data breach. That's added on top of 56 million leaked email addresses and credit card information for a total of more than 100 million.

That dwarfs Target's recent breach of 70 million people

Home Depot, the largest home improvement retailer in the world, said the stolen data was obtained in part by malware, or "malicious software" installed in self-checkout machines.

While email addresses were leaked, passwords were not, Home Depot said in a statement. Home Depot is offering identity theft protection to affected customers.
