Sheriff's officials: Poway High student says 'school shooting' text was joke

POWAY, Calif. (KGTV) - A Poway High School student's text message to friends that referenced a "shooting at the school tomorrow" was posted on social media, but sheriff's officials said the threat was determined to be unfounded.

According to sheriff's officials, the unidentified student "told some of his friends via a text message conversation that there would be a shooting at the school tomorrow. The student also posted a screen shot of the conversation on Instagram for his friends to see."

Sheriff's detectives went to the student's home Tuesday night for a threat assessment, and the student told detectives "he was joking around with some of his friends."

After a search of the home, detectives determined the student "did not have access to any firearms and he was released to his parents."

Sheriff's officials said Poway High administrators were notified and were looking into the possibility other students were involved in the incident.

According to sheriff's officials, the student did not attend school on Wednesday.
