CHULA VISTA -- A motor home burst into flames overnight Wednesday in Chula Vista, seriously burning a man who was inside at the time.

The fire off the 2200 block of Main Street near Industrial Boulevard broke out around 11:45 p.m. Wednesday, a dispatcher for the Chula Vista Fire Department said.

A friend of the victim who witnessed the incident told 10News that after the RV caught fire the victim came running out, also ablaze. He dropped to the ground and rolled while another witness rushed over with a blanket to put out the flames on his body. A dog that was still in the RV was able to escape by jumping out a window.

Chula Vista Fire Department crews responded and extinguished the fire. The victim was transported to UC San Diego Medical Center in Hillcrest with serious burn injuries, Chula Vista police said.

According to his friend, the man had reportedly purchased the RV only a week ago.

The cause is under investigation.
