It was a pet owner's worst fear; a beloved dog, caught in the jaws of two pit bulls.
"It looked like something out of a horror movie," Debbie Brzezinski said.
She says two pit bulls grabbed her Chihuahua, Pico, through her fence. The usually perky pup is now on heavy pain medication after emergency surgery.
"He's got feeding tubes," Brzezinski said. "And he's not quite sure what to do with his tongue because it's all so torn up inside there."
The attack comes at an already hard time for Brzezinski; her husband passed away a few weeks ago. Pico is one of her last ties to him.
"It was my husband's [dog]. And I mean he's part of the family. He is family. He's precious. He's funny. He's crazy," Brzezinski said.
She reported it to animal control, but by law, officers have to witness the attack to take action. They say Brzezinski can take the pit bulls' owner to civil court if she wants his dogs declared dangerous.
"They investigated and went over and educated him on how to take care of his pit bulls," Brzezinski said.
She's worried it won't be enough and it's just a matter of time before the dogs bite a person.
"I always heard that things come in threes. So I'm waiting, you know, for the next thing to happen. And I hope it's nothing bad," Brzezinski said.
Brzezinski has more than $3000 in veterinarian bills. Her family has set up a GoFundMe account for donations.
