CHULA VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) - The Otay Mesa Water District Board voted Monday to censure board member Hector Gastelum following racially charged comments he posted on Twitter.

Earlier this year, Gastelum tweeted: "Let's pressure our legislators to prevent #subhuman #scum from #USA to #MAGA."

He also tweeted: "This is how the left learns #Muslim #Islam #Sharia aren't compatible with any form of #civilsociety #equality."

In a recent Chula Vista City Council meeting, dozens of citizens asked the city of Chula Vista to take a public stand against Gastelum.

While Chula Vista city leaders do not have authority over Gastelum's position, the Otay Mesa Water District Board does, and they put the issue up to a vote Monday night.

It was decided Gastelum will be removed from all of the board's committees. He is also banned from showing up at Otay Water District functions.

Gastelum is only allowed to attend the monthly board meetings.
