ESCONDIDO, Calif. (KGTV) - An Orange Glen High School student claimed to fight off a would-be kidnapper while walking to school Thursday.

The 15-year-old female student was walking in the 600 block of Linwood Street just after 7:30 a.m. when the suspect grabbed the student, Escondido Union High School District officials said. The student was able to fight off the suspect and run away.

No injuries to the teen were reported.

District officials said the student got ahold of people nearby, who followed the suspect and were able to catch a photo of him.

Escondido Police identified the suspect as 28-year-old Edgar Gutierrez Gutierrez of Escondido. With the assistance of the U.S. Marshal’s San Diego Fugitive Task Force, Gutierrez was located in the City of San Diego at about 6:15 p.m. and taken into custody.

Escondido Police are currently investigating. Anyone with information is asked to call EPD detective Terese Ruiz at 760-839-4790 or their anonymous tip line at 760-743-8477.

EUHSD reminded students to always walk in groups to school and be aware of their surroundings.
