NATIONAL CITY -- A man changing a tire alongside a South Bay freeway in the predawn darkness Tuesday morning was struck and killed by a vehicle whose driver then pulled over and ran off.
The fatal crash occurred about 5:30 a.m. in a center median on southbound Interstate 5 near Mile of Cars Way in National City, according to the California Highway Patrol.
The victim died at the scene. His name was withheld pending family notification.
The hit-and-run driver remained at large as of 11 a.m., CHP spokesman Tommy Doerr said. No description of the fugitive motorist was immediately available.
Officers blocked off two southbound lanes to allow for investigation. The closure remained in effect as of late morning.
