Buffalo Police found the body Tuesday of a police diver who disappeared Friday during a training mission in New York's Niagara River.
Officer Craig Lehner's body was recovered in the area where officers have been searching for the past five days.
Officer Lehner, 34, did not resurface during a routine training mission with the Buffalo Police Underwater Recovery Team in the Niagara River near Unity Island. The divers were attached to a tether but Lehner's line was detached before his disappearance.
A police lieutenant said Lehner disappeared in a current that is known to push divers close to a wall.
Crews borrowed 3-D mapping boats from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to find the officer. Bad weather complicated the search.
A picture taken by a viewer showed officers lined up along the Black Rock Canal.
BPD say thank you to all the agencies who helped bring our Officer Craig Lehner home. God bless him. May he rest in peace.
