OCEAN BEACH (KGTV) -- Authorities are investigating a deadly hit-and-run crash that happened along Interstate 8 in Ocean Beach on Saturday morning.
The incident happened at around 6 a.m. on westbound I-8, between W. Mission Bay Drive and Sunset Cliffs Boulevard, according to California Highway Patrol officials.
A gray four-dour passenger vehicle crashed through a fence along the right should of I-8, slammed into a tree then rolled over for several yards before it came to a stop.
The victim, described as a male transient, was on the north side of the fence when he was struck. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
"There is transient encampment in the path of the vehicle, and that transient suffered fatal injuries unfortunately," said CHP officer Enrique Melgar.
Melgar said the occupants of the vehicle fled the scene. There were reports that three people were spotted leaving the crash.
San Diego police detained three people south of the freeway, but authorities could not say if they were involved in the incident.
