SAN DIEGO - The body of a man who appeared to have died of natural causes was found in a concrete alcove alongside a sidewalk near Petco Park Tuesday morning, authorities reported.

A San Diego Harbor Police officer made the discovery near the Hilton San Diego Bayfront shortly before 6:30 a.m., said Jeff Geary, a sergeant with the agency.

The body of the unidentified man -- who appeared to have been a transient in his 40s or 50s -- bore no obvious signs of traumatic injury, according to Geary.

The San Diego Police Department's homicide division was notified about the death but sent no detectives to investigate, the sergeant said. The county Medical Examiner's Office took custody of the body for autopsy and identification purposes.

The man was found under a blanket and appeared to have been sleeping in the spot where his body was discovered, Geary said.
