A 31-year-old man has been arrested for elder abuse after an hours-long standoff at a house in a Casa de Oro neighborhood that started with a man in his 70s being assaulted, according to the San Diego Sheriff's Department.

The incident happened in the 4300 block of Alta Mira Drive around 6:30 p.m. Monday.

Sheriff's deputies say Aaron Spaulding was speeding on the street when the elderly man yelled at him to stop.

Spaulding then got out of his vehicle and assaulted the elderly man, who suffered minor injuries, deputies said.

The suspect ran into his home that he shares with his parents and holed himself inside for nearly three hours, according to deputies.

Deputies said Spaulding was threatening them with a knife and boiling hot water.

He eventually surrendered peacefully and did not have a knife with him at the time of his arrest, deputies said.

Spaulding was arrested on charges of elder abuse. The elderly man was treated on scene for his injuries.

Deputies say drugs may have been involved.
