Homeowner makes discovery on surveillance video

A North Park man says he did a double take when surveillance video showed a thief targeting his house.

At 10:19 p.m. on Friday night, a man in shorts and a t-shirt eyes the house on Montclair Street, and leaves.

“He looked at it, but didn't take it,” said Adam Jakowenko.

It was a package Jakowenko had forgotten to take it inside.

At 10:24 p.m., the man was back - this time with a cap, and quickly, he snatches the package from behind the front gate.

The footage stunned Jakowenko when he saw it the first time.

“I felt these butterflies. I got that feeling. Don’t even tell me this really happened,” said Jakowenko.

Inside the package: a roll of athletic tape that cost $9.99.

Jakowenko shrugs off the loss, but he remains concerned about what else the thief might be up to.

“If someone is casing the neighborhood, that's concerning, because they're obviously looking for stuff,” said Jakowenko.

On Friday night, that stuff disappeared while the couple was inside.

“That was really upsetting. We were 40 feet away,” said Jakowenko.

The couple's dog barked briefly when the man first walked up, but didn't when the package was taken.

“You don't really expect it to happen when you're at home watching television. Pretty much stolen right from under us,” said Jakowenko.

The video shows the thief was wearing a TaylorMade cap. If you have any information, you're asked to call San Diego Police.
