SAN CLEMENTE, Calif. (KGTV) - Orange County fire crews are battling a vegetation fire near the northern edge of Camp Pendleton Wednesday.
The fire began as a 10-acre vegetation fire before 6 p.m. at Cristianitos Road, near Camp Mateo Campground. As of 6:50 p.m., the blaze had grown to at least 200 acres and spreading north, according to the Orange County Fire Authority.
Around 8 p.m. crews reported that the fire had grown to 400 acres, but around 9 p.m. the Orange County Fire Authority told 10News that, because of more accurate mapping, the actual acreage of the fire was only 190 acres.
Orange County Fire Department crews are on scene and Camp Pendleton fire crews -including air assistance - are helping fight the fire.
Smoke could be seen over homes east of Interstate 5. No word yet on containment, but the public information officer says the scene looks better than it did earlier in the evening.
The cause of the fire is unknown. No injuries have been reported.
This is a developing story. Stay with 10News as more information becomes available.
