Fire rips through Clairemont apartment complex

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Dozens of families were forced to stand out in the cold Tuesday night after a fire ripped through their Clairemont apartment complex. 

Firefighters tell 10News the fire started on the third floor of the Stratton Apartments, a building in the 3000 block of Caminito Aguilar.

The fire started in the middle of three units, damaging the apartments on each side, according to firefighters. No one was home.  

Investigators on scene told 10News they are evaluating the damage and will reach out to Red Cross for victim assistance. 

Severe damage was done to the whole building, firefighters say they are assessing the structural integrity of the building. At this point, it is unclear when the residents will be allowed to return to their units.
