SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A family that just returned home from vacation escaped from a fire that ripped through their Bay Park house early Wednesday morning.

The fire was reported at around 2:30 a.m. at a home in the 4200 block of Dakota Drive, according to San Diego Fire-Rescue Department officials.

10News learned a family member smelled smoke and alerted everyone.

Flames shot through the home’s roof, prompting responding firefighters to climb onto the roof to battle the fire. It took crews nearly 30 minutes to fully extinguish the blaze.

Officials said the fire, which was contained to the home's attic, left a gaping hole in the roof.

The family members were not injured, and fire officials said the fire did not spread to any nearby homes.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
