SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - California Highway Patrol officers rocked a car back and forth early Wednesday morning to wake up a driver passed out behind the wheel as his vehicle was stopped on an Interstate 805 off-ramp.
At about 3 a.m., officers responded to reports of a car stopped on the I-805 off-ramp to Imperial Avenue. Officers put down spike strips in front of the vehicle in case the driver were to step on the gas pedal if he woke up.
After officers shook the car and hit the windows with flashlights to get the man's attention, the driver eventually woke up, rolled down his window and got out of the car.
Officers told 10News the driver told them he drank a clear liquid but did not remember what it was or how much of it he consumed.
Following field sobriety tests, the driver was arrested on suspicion of DUI.
10News learned the 26-year-old man was already on 5 years probation for a DUI conviction in 2013.
Wednesday morning's incident is similar to a situation that occurred on I-805 in March 2015, where a female driver was passed out behind the wheel while stopped on the freeway.
In one other incident, in April 2015, a woman asleep at the wheel while stopped on I-15 suddenly wakes up, gets out of her car and wanders on the freeway. She was eventually cited for DUI.
