SPRING VALLEY, Calif. - A woman was killed Monday afternoon when a car careened off an East County freeway and smashed into a tree.
The Honda Civic crashed off southbound state Route 125 near Spring Street shortly after 2:30 p.m., according to the California Highway Patrol.
Witnesses told the CHP that the Civic was traveling at a high rate of speed on westbound SR-94, and at the last moment, "the driver made an unsafe turning movement to the left in an attempt to take the [southbound] SR-125 transition road. The driver lost control and went down an embankment where it struck a large tree," according to the CHP.
The CHP said the driver was not wearing a seatbelt.
The 30-year-old victim, whose name was not immediately available, died at the scene, CHP public affairs Officer Robert Catano said.
No other vehicles were involved and no other injuries were reported.
