OTAY MESA, Calif. (KGTV) - A construction worker erecting the US-Mexico border wall prototypes in Otay Mesa fell 40 feet into a hole Wednesday.
The accident happened at the construction site at 10 a.m., according to 10News photographer Rett Lawrence.
The hole was three feet in diameter and the worker was able to extend his elbows to slow his fall, his employer said.

An ambulance arrived at the scene to treat the man's scraped elbows and he resumed work within 30 minutes.
U.S. Border Patrol issued a statement on the incident:
Today at about 10:00 a.m., a construction employee fell down a 40-foot hole at the border wall prototype construction site near the U.S./Mexico international border in Otay Mesa. The employee was able to break his fall during his decent and did not sustain any injuries. The employee was medically evaluated and was cleared to return to work. The employee was working on behalf of one of the companies selected to construct a border wall prototype.
