Democratic presidential candidate Bernie Sanders will be making an appearance in San Diego County this weekend, 10News learned.

National City Mayor Ron Morrison told 10News that the Sanders campaign contacted the city to get a permit for a rally in Kimball Park Saturday.

Morrison said campaign staffers have already done a walkthrough at the park in preparation for Sanders' arrival.

According to Morrison, National City's City Council unanimously approved the last-minute permit request. Morrison noted that details are still being worked on but acknowledged that the rally will be sometime on May 21.

Morrison told 10News the Secret Service will be taking positions at the park on Friday night through Saturday night.

The Sanders event will be the third presidential rally the city has hosted, with the others for John F. Kennedy in 1968 and Bill Clinton in 1992.
