SAN DIEGO -- Authorities Monday released the name of a 33-year-old man killed in a fiery car crash on Interstate 8 in the far southeastern reaches of San Diego County.Nathaniel Schofield of El Centro was westbound in the Jacumba area when he lost control of the Nissan sedan about 10 p.m. Sunday, according to the California Highway Patrol and county Medical Examiner's Office. The vehicle careened down a roadside embankment, activating a motion detector monitored by the U.S. Border Patrol.
Border Patrol agents arrived a short time later and pulled Schofield out of the vehicle just before it was engulfed by flames. Medics performed CPR on the victim, then declared him dead. The burning car sparked a brush fire that scorched about a quarter-acre, Cal Fire Capt. Nick Schuler said.
