Fire Damages Home In El Cajon

EL CAJON, Calif. -- An El Cajon couple will have to spend the Independence Day holiday with relatives because a fire damaged their home Friday, a fire official said.The fire was occurred about 1:30 a.m. at a two-story home in the 1900 block of Belmore Court, said El Cajon Fire spokeswoman Monica Zech.Fire crews doused the flames in less than 15 minutes, Zech said.
The home's smoke detectors were working at the time the blaze started, but the husband and wife living there said they were alerted to the fire by the flickering lights of the flames and crackling noises.They escaped uninjured, Zech said.Damage is estimated at $300,000. The heaviest damage was to the roof and attic, Zech said.The cause of the fire was under investigation.
