CAMP PENDLETON, Calif. -- Ground and airborne crews worked Thursday to contain a brush fire that blackened about 150 acres in a wildland area straddling Camp Pendleton and Cleveland National Forest. The blaze erupted for unknown reasons in the northeastern reaches of the Oceanside-area Marine Corps base about 4 p.m. Wednesday, Cal Fire spokeswoman Roxanne Provaznik said. The flames eventually spread into San Mateo Canyon in the federal wilderness preserve stretching through eastern and northern San Diego County.
By midday, firefighters from Camp Pendleton, the U.S. Forest Service and Cal Fire had the blaze, dubbed the Yankee Fire, about 5 percent surrounded. They predicted full containment sometime Thursday night or Friday morning."It's not really actively spreading anymore," Provaznik said in the early afternoon. No structural damage or injuries were reported.
